Grey's Anatomy Anyone?

I missed Grey's Anatomy. I had a hair appointment...it was the only one I could get. And when my hair is not right....it's a problem. Like it was last week, I'm sure you remember. At any rate I had to get it taken care of...immediately. I had no choice.

Knowing I'd missed Grey's Anatomy and I don't have tivo or dvr or anything that will complicate my cable bill any more than it already is....I was totally annoyed. I went to abc.com to see if a rerun was coming up that I could catch. How else was I supposed to find out how George was dealing with his father's death and if Christina and Burke made up...so frustrating!

So I checked out abc.com and I don't know who is the genius behind this but they had the whole episode available on the website. Fabulous! I didn't even have to pay, or register or anything. It started off..."This episode of Grey's Anatomy is sponsored with limited commercial interruption by Disney" So, with the Disney logo perched across the top of the frame I watched the first couple of segments right on my laptop. Then a brief 30 second Disney commercial interrupted a couple times...not enough to disrupt the flow of the show like a normal slew of commercials, but just short enough that I didn't mind waiting through it.

I thought about how normally when commercials come on my regular television I'll run around the house doing other things until I hear the show I'm watching is back. However on the web...the ads were just short and sweet enough to keep me watching.

I know a few of you mentioned you watched tv online...do you notice the advertising any more than you would on a regular television? What do you think are the benefits of online television advertising...is it more or less effective than traditional TV? If you haven't seen anything check out www.abc.com or www.mtv.com they operate off of a similar model.

Bill Gates was quoted recently saying that the web was going to revolutionize television. I'm prone to agree. I never would have thought of watching TV on my laptop but now because of the way it's set up, I prefer it.

I've since watched an episode of the Hills on mtv.com and watched a few episodes of Ugly Betty a show I never even thought of watching, one night when I was bored. What do you all think about this experience? Does it pose any advantages for the networks and/or the advertisers? How can this form of online advertising translate into online commerce? Let's Discuss. One paragraph of your thoughts should be enough to keep the discussion moving....Looking forward to it!

Yes I find it extreamly convinet, Being that I am geneally working or missing my favortie shows because I don't have full cable, I like the fact that I can easily watch all my shows and not have to pay for them

I had thought the same thing. I had been on the abc website for another reason and had noticed that you could watch previous episodes on the site. I had always been intrested in Desperate Housewives but had never watched it. There, I caught up on all the episodes and I was at work bored, so it worked out!

Personally, I hate watching television on my computer. Yes, there are less commercials and they dont last as long, but the quality isnt there. Sometimes loading problems occur or the show starts over some how. There are just a lot more errors that can occur.

Hey everyone. I finally realized how to get here and put a comment on so I could get credit. This was so confusing. Anyways, I hardly ever watch tv much less tv through the internet or the computer. I did however try to order the superbowl through my computer to watch last weekend and they charged $25 and I was under the assumption that I could watch it then and there from my tv, but no they had to send me some sort of box to hook up and then i could watch it. So i couldn't even do it after all. Kind of frustrating!

I love Greys Anatomy but I never think of watching anything online. I dont think I would like it. I dont even have tevo. I'm old school I guess. I should try to watch tv online. I like watching tv when I have time so next time I do I'll tey watching it online.

Oh my gosh I love grey's anatomny too! I have watched it online as well and I loved how short the commercials are because it's not so annoying and you can get more into the episodes. I don't think that internet adverising is that effective because you can just close the box and I never read or listen to them like tv.

Ralinda Harvey said...

I agree w/ Markie...normally I lower the volume when the internet ad comes on and check email. Maybe that is the equivalent to flipping the channel.... funny how things evolve. However I do find that logo that is perched above the screen while you watch may be an excellent branding tool for companies. It forms a correlation between the advertiser and the company since it is so constant and not a come and go commercial.

On another note, for those of you who found this confusing remember with out struggle there is no progress! I'm glad you all are getting the hang of it...let's continue the conversation.

Would love to hear more comments like Markie's regarding thoughts on the effectiveness of this type of advertising. Good point Markie!

I think it's amazing that we have the ability to watch television on our computers. Although there are less commercials, I personally prefer to watch shows on tv. Who ever thought of this concept is a genius though. The best part is that its free! They are also smart showing the 30 second long commercial for the sponsors. This one quick commercial doesnt give you a chance to leave the room and therefore they have your full attention for their advertisement. If I ever missed an episode of lost and I forget to record it (which will never happen), I will be the first one to watch it on abc.com!

I have never actually been able to catch a show online. The only two shows that Im truely addicted to that I watch on a weekly basis is One Tree Hill, and The OC. One week I did miss an episode of One Tree Hill, and I was really upset about that. So I went on the CW web-site to see if they offered the episode on-line. I was extremely annoyed because I couldnt figure out if they did or not. It was really confusing to find first of all, and then when I thought I found it, it wouldnt connect to my computer. I tried at least five different times, and then I gave up. I hope your experience wasnt as difficult as mine. But overall I wasnt stressing to much about missing the episode, because I know I will see it again because I always buy the seasons on DVD. However if the online episode did work, that would have been extremely convinet and you would have no need for TIVO. Which I still dont own one by the way

I think that advertisments have an advantage of being on the internet over being on television. Internet advertisements esspecially the ones between internet television shows are shown repetitively, which helps the viewer remember their ad. I watched an episode of Grey, about four months ago and i can still remember the ad which was shown (home depot-little girl wants to paint her room in big girl colors, so she takes her favorite hat to the store, along with her dad and tells the sales associate that she wants her walls to be the same color as her fav. hat, and of course her room comes out perfect, with the help of home depot) Now thats great advertising! & Im not sure how this will effect ecommerce, but i do wonder will these commercial breaks get longer, and start to resemble tv commercials?

Ralinda Harvey said...

I agree...that's great advertising...so interesting you can remember the whole commercial. I watched "Ugly Betty," last night...which is hilarious by the way and do remember it was sponsored by Direct TV. I do think the short time has something to do with online advertising being effective.

Another fabulous part about online advertising is that if I wanted direct TV....they already have me on the computer so I can order Direct TV right then and there. If I were simply watching TV I'd have to take another motion and log on to a computer or make a call.

By advertising on the web the advertiser met me where I was....which promotes a higher conversion rate....

any thoughts??? You guys have been great...thanks for commenting....hopefully we can all learn from each others experiences and take some things into our real professions.

Hi...
i just figured out how to get on blog! Basically, i agree with you about watching Tv online as the new craze! Less commercials and the benefit and convienince of having Tv right at your computer is amazing. People now a days are always connected to the web in some way or another. So, they can watch their favorite shows easily. although i love watching Tv online, i don't think i will be able to abandon my Tv all together. (my labtop and Tv can live in harmony for now ha!)

I'm with you Lauren...I couldn't imagine not having a TV......no matter how short the commercials are.

I guess we're old school:) LOL....

I was thinking for you guys final project it would be good to see some group come up with an "online television marketing pitch" for your company. I know fashion companies don't typically advertise on television but since it's on the web and there's a lot of product placement going on how cool would it be to see a link to Paige Paper Denim at the top of a Desperate Housewives episode where Eva Longoria has them on.... I think that could send sales through the roof....with that direct correlation.

Any thoughts????

I was thinking on the same lines as the most of the girls.
Watching a show on Tv is great but the commercials sometime just get to you.Mostly cause they take up so much time and usually during that period I get up & grab something to eat or I usually grab my laptop and type bits of my homework I have due. The main thing about online TV is the convenience factor - incase you cant make it time for a certain show at a certain time you can always watch it online at your convenience. Also the commercials online are short and hence people don't mind actually watching them.
In conclusion I would like to say that online Tv is beneficial and way more convenient than watching it on television & honestly I cant really tell the difference unless you have a rather large screen at home.
I would have to say online tv is brilliant !!!

I totally agree with you and Bill Gates about the internet revolutionizing our lives. That's funny that you had that recent experiance with Grey's Anatomy because I believe last week I had the same experiance with The Office. I was bummed because I missed an eposide, and I would not naturally turn to the internet. This time I did. I did not have the same success that you had but still enjoyed what I was able to watch. I have noticed their mini commercials, they are shown almost everywhere now. I was looking at NY fashion week online and the latest lines and they had brief ads between them. I think this form of advertisment is what the future holds for marketing. Marketers are going to have to pay more attention to this outlet and understand it's consumer more. There is so much more to learn, and it is really going to begin to change our lives. I believe the internet and television will become synonymous before we know it.

I agree Amanda...Good points. Sorry about your experience with "The office:("

I think that it is a great that our technology has gotten to the point ( and still continuing) where TV shows are now available to be watched online. I have only watched an episode of the OC online (back when the show was good) when I had missed it. Though, it didn't have any commercials, I know that when I'll watch a music video online, always before they play a commercial ... and in whatever I'm watching I hate to be interrupted, that's just me, so commercials most of the time annoy me.. expect if they are creative and interesting.
I think that more people might start watching TV online if they don't have Tivo because that way they won't have to miss their shows. And the commericals will be not as long as they are on TV. It's a great intervention, and I think I might have to try it more.

Ive check out some episode of greys anatomy online as well... i honestly would rather watch them online since there are less commercials and more drama =D, advertisers that get a chance to advertise during the episode like disney arent that bag, they arent that long and i too wouldnt mind sitting thru them. i watched the commercials and wasnt all bugged out by them, cause when i do catch grey on the tube commercial always come on a high points of the show, and most commercials run every 12 mins if you didnt know that... a fun fact i learned from my buddy at cbs. i believe less is more, and sometimes much more effective.

Ralinda Harvey said...

Elmer...yes less is more...good point. I want you guys to consider the things we mention in the blog as you prepare for your presentations.....

also, still waiting on companies from a lot of you all...

I totally agree that it is a great alternative to missing your favorite shows, though since I don't have a laptop yet, I prefer watching shows on my traditional set so i can stay in bed and watch. I would have to sit at my desk to watch on my computer. I think the further that technology progresses into smaller and more affordable options, online will be the preferred choice. Much like now everyone has cellphones, in the near future everyone will have laptops, and this will be a non-issue.

AVAN said...

i actually don`t watch tv online, but i feel that this can be of a convenience to the busier person alsways on the go because they are able to catch thair favorite television shows when they have the time. as far as advertising, this probably helps the advertisers because if the customer watches this short and sweet commercial and happens to be interested in the product, they are already at their computer to go look at the advertisers website, and if the company is fortunate enough, the consumer can open up a new window to go to their websire while finishing the rest of the show.

L Gensemer said...

i think that you are right about using online tv ads for our marketing pitch... i think that is a new way to market for fashion products. very interesting... also, i was wondering if this is the right blog to be writing on for our midterm... ????

Ralinda Harvey said...

Yes Lauren....you're at the right spot..you guys should be commenting on this post and the "ezine" post...for full credit.

btw...I went to a product placement pannel at the school last quarter...did anyone else go? It was very very interesting with the participants discussing how they place product in television and film for advertising purposes.

The next obvious step would be selling that product and how great would it be to be able to sell "ecommerce" directly after the product placement is seen.

You're absolutely right Lauren, a combination of product placement, online tv advertising and fashion would make the perfect combo... raising unique visitors as new people click through on an ad. Remember John mentioned unique visitors was one of the hardest variables to manipulate in order to raise sales. So this may be a big step in the right direction.

When we're thinking of ideas for the final project I encourage you all to think as creatively as possible. Be innovative! You can combine several different elements to compose a winning pitch. Let's all brainstorm with this week off and talk more in class....

I think it is a great idea for ABC.com to have full episodes online for us. I know that I definitely get upset when I have to miss Greys. That is a show that you absolutely cannot miss even one episode of, because they are so intense. I fortunately didn't have to miss it last night, and it was a good one.

I think that internet advertising is very effective. For me personally, I will always watch the advertisements in between Greys on ABC.com because they are so short. There is not enough time to set your computer down and go do something. By the time I put my computer down and get up, the commercial is almost over. I actually am a person that does't really mind commericals though.

Overall, I think that advertising online is very smart. Most of the time, people are on their computers because they are bored. When a person is bored, they like to search different websites. Whereas, on television, tivo and dvr make it very easy for consumers to just simply skip right over unwanted advertising.

Im commenting finally because I could not get my username to work. But I feel that online television watching is going to become the new craze, once they have perfected the glitches when watching online television. Sometimes when I try to watch a show online, the show will freeze and I will get frustrated, so I end up going back to the oiginal television. It is a convenient thing, but I feel that watching television on a normal tv is somewhat relaxing to me, because I get away from my computer and all the work that is on it.

so i finally got my internet working and i hope this is the blog that i need to do for the midterm because i'm so lost at this blogging stuff...but about grays anatomy i have never seen it i normally dont have time to watch to much TV. All i know about that show its that that main guy patrick dempsy ( i dont know how to spell his lat name!) was in a movie in the 80s thats one of my most favorite movies! Cant Buy Me Love! great film!

Personally, I pay more attention to the online commercials that are aired on ABC vs. the regular T.V. commercials. I think people have more patience for them since they're only 30 seconds long and not 5 minutes. I usually do the same when a program breaks to commercial I find something else in my apartment to fill my time with. Advertisers should consider cutting down the commercial time to under 3 minutes to keep their viewer watching.

I must say that the Internet has just made life convenient. Website is one of the most useful tool in telecommunication nowadays.
Not just to watch TV on the Web but you can get reviews and read chat with other people who watch the same show as well. It's a good way to network with other people with common interests.
The only thing I missed from the old days though is the fact that I use try to have TV dates with my girlfriends. We will try to get together at someone's house to have a potluck dinner and watch the episode. it doesn't happen anymore since everyone is so busy and we can now tivo the shows or watch them on the Web. =P

During the beginning of the week while I'm in LA for school I do not watch tv because we have no cable in the apratment. Though when I return back to San Diego I make sure to catch up on my favorite shows. I have only seen Greys Anatomy once and I didnt like it. My favorite shows are NipTuck which is currently not on and CSI: Las Vegas which I watch every Thursday. It is really helpful to have DVR so I can record all my shows and movies ahead of time so I dont miss out on them.

OMG! I was finally able to log on to this page. I was using @blogspot and it is actually .blogspot. Anyway I think that this experience was really cool because I have heard of friends and people watching t.v. online, but I always thought that it would be complicated. I actually went online yesturday to watch and listen to the thank you speeches for the Oscar's and I loved it. It was so easy, the sound and quality wasn't that great, but it was so much better than I thought.

I watch shows that I have missed, on mtv.com weekly. The Hills especially! I love not seeing commercials, and it is a great way to keep yourswelf updated and to fill the time that you are bored. Does anyone know what other networks let you watch the shows online, besides mtv.com? I think it is a great idea overall, because how often are we all searching the web, so a show is great.

Jill Lineback said...

I think allowing fans of shows like Grey's Anatomy to watch episodes online is a great idea for many reasons. Many people today now enjoy watching these shows online over TV because of fewer commercials, but I think the advertisements shown on the internet are more successful than those shown on TV. I also think that by offering this free service the network profits by gaining more customer loyalty.
